The researchers were put in a strange position in this development, as a good deal of their research budget came from the Catholic Church, who was a major funding agent for Harvard's group of hospitals. Understanding that their work might be discouraged by their patron, they sought to sell it as a medicine for regulation of menses and for prevention of ovarian cancer, downplaying the real goal of contraception.

At the same time they realized that they might get found out, and so they had a plan B - a secondary lab in Mexico.

The original pill was a progestin only pill. They produced this pill in Cambridge and also in their lab in Mexico. They then ran two randomized trials with women, with the primary outcome being pregnancy.

After the data was analyzed, the group was surprised by the results! In Mexico the pregnancy rate for the treatment group was only 1-2%, while in Cambridge the pregnancy rate was more like 10%.

They were puzzled by this difference, so they sent their pills to an independent lab for analysis.

The pills made in Cambridge were exactly what they thought - 100% progestin. The pills in Mexico, on the other hand, turned out to have been made a little sloppily, and were filled with contaminants. And what was the contaminant? Estrogen!

As thus, it was found that a combination estrogen-progestin pill was more effective for birth control than progestin alone.

From moldy bread to birth control, many medical discoveries are serendipitous indeed.Nicholas Fogelson, MDhttp://www.academicobgyn.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4324635777375367826.post-78564498049376295382010-05-09T16:17:51.750-04:002010-05-09T16:17:51.750-04:00Happy Birthday BCP!
